July, July, July It never seemed so strange This is the story of the road that goes to my house And what ghosts there do remain And all the troughs that run the length and breadth of my house And the chickens how they rattle chicken chains ― The Decemberists, July July Happy July! She rolled in nice and cool, but man has she made up for that fast! Hot and humid and stormy. Oh, we NEEDED that rain! For anyone wondering, we’re in a drought. I don’t know how “official” it is, but it’s not great. We’ve certainly noticed around here. We’ve made the difficult decision to start regular watering of the fields in an effort to keep our plants healthy and productive. I know it sounds weird to say that decision was “difficult”, but we really do strive for true sustainability and very little intervention. Using water is using a valuable resource, and we don’t take that lightly. Hopefully more rain will come and this will only be a temporary thing, but some of the plants - NOT THE TOMATOES - are really suffering and we’re seeing reduced production. Which is not good. On the other hand, our lettuce has been producing like crazy so, you know, whatever lettuce - you keep doing your thing. |
