Happy July!

When I was a kid, the 4th of July always felt like the middle of summer, and I guess for a kid on summer vacation it kind of is. Now, as an adult, I’m so intensely aware of the changing of the seasons - both “official” and natural - but sometimes it still surprises me that by the 4th of July summer has really just started. We think of hot weather, sweet corn, watermelons. But what nature really gives us is the very first tastes of summer - warmish days and sugar snap peas. I’ve started to see the 4th of July as the real beginning of the (hopefully) hot, (sometimes but not usually) lazy summer afternoons. The lightening bugs are here (as are the mosquitoes), and things are just getting started. There’s so much summer to look forward to - watermelons and tomatoes are a month away. So welcome, summer. Bring on the heat (because, regardless of your opinion on hot weather, we need it!).

For those of you thinking about peaches - and I KNOW that’s a lot of you, we’re in the process of organizing our peach trips for this summer. For those of you who don’t know, every summer we go down south to Rendleman Orchards in Alto Pass, IL - near Carbondale - and bring back the most amazing peaches you have ever had. The family has been in business since 1873, and they have run the farm the entire time.

In market news, we’ll be in Rockford, Huntley, and Logan Square this weekend. In celebration of the 4th of July, this weekend the Rockford City Market has extended hours (they’re open until 10 - though some of the vendors - us included - will only be there until 8:30 as usual) - they have extra entertainment as well as food and drink - come party! And on Saturday, the Huntley Market will host a Family Fun Day, including a craft fair and games for the kids. So come on out this weekend and enjoy the (hopefully, fingers crossed) beautiful weather!
