10/23/13 newsletter

Well holy wow has it gotten cold!! I would say unseasonably so, but then we all know we’ll have some warm days and cold days between now and whenever it decides to stay cold. But I sure am loving this fireplace right now. And we have had a freeze, which has killed off everything that wasn’t protected. We were more or less prepared for that, which is why some things were covered. So all those summer crops are gone.

However, on that note – and this is for you SHAREHOLDERS – we will be sending out one more share this week. This is your + in the 18+ weeks you signed up for.

As for fall/winter shares, if you want one you must sign up by THIS WEEKEND. Next week will be too late. These will start the first week of November. This is a pay-as-you-go system – it’s a much more casual share program than the 18+ week summer shares. The shares are $25 a week and you pay when you pick up. We need people to let us know how often they want shares (weekly, or bi-weekly, or just once) and how far into the winter you want to go (just a few weeks, a month, or until we can no longer fill shares). These shares will consist mainly of greens and root crops (carrots, beets, turnips), and possibly winter squash, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.

And remember sign up for next year’s shares! This year’s prices are only good until Thanksgiving, so you have one more month to take advantage of the deal, and then you’ll pay more (of course, we put all the money to good use, but why not take a deal when you can!). It’s totally easy – go online, fill out the form. Or tell us, and we’ll fill it out for you. Honestly, super easy. And then you’re already ahead of the game for 2014 – in October!

Come see us at the Elgin Food Day Market this Thursday, October 24th from 11-2 at Sherman Hospital! We’ll be at other markets around the area on and off, and we’ll keep you posted about those as they come up. Remember to keep reading the newsletter and our updates to find out where and when you can visit us!
